A Photographer's Guide
So, you’ve planned the perfect proposal in the breathtaking landscapes of Gatlinburg or the Great Smoky Mountains—now the big question is, what should you wear? As an adventure elopement photographer, I’ve captured countless proposals in these mountains, and I can tell you firsthand that what you wear can make a huge difference in both your comfort and your photos!
Whether you’re popping the question at a scenic overlook, beside a rushing waterfall, or in a dreamy forest setting, here’s my guide to choosing the perfect outfit for a proposal in the Smokies.

Dress for the Season
The Smoky Mountains experience all four seasons, and each one brings its own unique beauty—but also its own set of wardrobe considerations!
Spring (March-May) – Blooming Flowers & Mild Temps
🌿 What to Wear: Light layers, flowy dresses, and neutral or pastel colors complement the fresh greens and wildflowers.
🌧️ Pro Tip: Spring showers can pop up unexpectedly, so consider water-resistant shoes and bring a stylish jacket just in case.
Summer (June-August) – Warm Days & Golden Sunsets
☀️ What to Wear: Lightweight fabrics like linen or cotton, breathable dresses, and comfortable, sturdy sandals.
💧 Pro Tip: It can get humid, so avoid heavy fabrics and dark colors that show sweat. Also, bring a small towel if you’re hiking!
Fall (September-November) – Stunning Foliage & Crisp Air
🍁 What to Wear: Earth tones like rust, mustard, or deep greens look incredible against the fall colors. Cozy sweaters, flannel shirts, and stylish boots are great choices.
🔥 Pro Tip: Mornings and evenings can be chilly—bring a warm layer that complements your outfit so you don’t freeze before you get to “Yes!”
Winter (December-February) – Snowy Peaks & Cozy Vibes
❄️ What to Wear: Layers are key! Wool coats, scarves, and boots add style while keeping you warm. Dark, rich colors like navy, emerald, or burgundy stand out beautifully in snowy backdrops.
🥾 Pro Tip: If you’re hiking to your proposal spot, wear warm boots with good traction—icy trails can be tricky!
Choose Colors That Complement the Scenery

The Smokies are filled with natural beauty, so choosing the right color palette helps you stand out while still blending harmoniously with the environment.
✔ Best Colors for the Smokies:
- Earth tones: Olive green, rust, mustard, brown
- Neutrals: Cream, beige, taupe, soft grays
- Pastels (for spring/summer): Blush, light blue, sage green
- Jewel tones (for fall/winter): Burgundy, emerald, navy
❌ Avoid: Neon colors or bright reds/oranges that can reflect onto your skin in photos.

Prioritize Comfort
Especially if hiking
If your proposal involves a scenic hike—like Clingmans Dome, Alum Cave, or Andrews Bald—you’ll want to balance looking good with feeling good.
👟 Shoes Matter! If you’re hiking, bring hiking boots or trail shoes and pack dressier shoes to change into. Trust me, your feet will thank you!
🎒 Pack Light & Smart – If you’re carrying a ring box, choose one that’s slim and discreet. Some couples bring a small backpack with water, snacks, and an extra layer.
Plan for the "After" Photos
Once the ring is on, you’ll want to soak in the moment—and capture some just-engaged photos! If you’re planning to celebrate with a champagne toast, twinkling lights, or a cozy cabin setup, consider how your outfits will look in both natural and indoor lighting.
💍 Pro Tip: If you’re surprising your partner, encourage them to dress up by planning a "casual photoshoot" or a fancy dinner afterwards!

The Final Touches: Accessories & Styling
✨ Keep It Simple – A hat, scarf, or layered jewelry can add personality without overpowering the moment.
🧥 Coordinated, Not Matching – You and your partner should complement each other’s outfits rather than wearing identical colors.
💄 Hair & Makeup – If you want a polished look, consider professional hair and makeup, but keep it natural enough for an outdoor setting.
