What to Pack for your Elopement in the Smokes

Essential Checklist

Planning a mountain elopement is an exciting adventure, but packing the right essentials can make all the difference in ensuring a stress-free and magical experience. From wedding attire to practical outdoor gear, hereโ€™s everything you need to bring for your Smoky Mountain elopement!

Checklist

Wedding Day Essentials

๐Ÿ’ Rings โ€“ The most important detail! Double-check that you have them packed securely.

๐Ÿ“œ Marriage License โ€“ Tennessee requires a valid marriage license, so be sure to bring it with you. This does not have to come on the hike, but make sure you have it in your car so the officiant can sign it as soon as you get off the trail!

๐Ÿ“– Vows โ€“ Whether handwritten or printed, keep them in a safe spot.

๐ŸŽ’ Elopement Day Bag โ€“ A small, easy-to-carry bag for your must-haves like water, snacks, and touch-up items.

Tip: Store rings and vows in a dedicated pouch to avoid misplacing them on the big day!

Wedding Attire & Accessories

๐Ÿ‘— Dress & Suit โ€“ Choose comfortable, breathable fabrics suited for outdoor settings. My husband wore comfortable but stylish hiking pants and he did not have to change! I chose a tulle fabric and was able to roll it up in my hiking bag and put it on over my pants on the trail!

๐Ÿฅพ Shoes โ€“ Comfortable, weather-appropriate footwear (consider hiking boots or sturdy flats if needed). I kept my hiking boots on for the ceremony. They weren't the fancy shoes most people wear but they added to the adventure.

๐Ÿงฅ Jacket or Wrap โ€“ Mountain weather can change quickly, so a stylish shawl or coat is a great idea.

๐Ÿ‘‘ Accessories โ€“ Jewelry, hairpieces, veil, or any special touches.

๐Ÿ‘– Backup Outfit โ€“ A second dress or outfit if you want variety in your photos or need a dry change.

Tip: Long dresses look stunning in mountain landscapes, but make sure yours is easy to move in for any light hiking or uneven terrain or can be bustled to keep from snagging or dragging.

Beauty & Touch-Up Kit

๐Ÿ’„ Makeup for Touch-Ups โ€“ Lipstick, powder, and setting spray to keep your look fresh.

๐Ÿชฎ Brush & Hair Accessories โ€“ Extra hair ties, bobby pins, and a small brush.

๐Ÿงด Sunscreen & Bug Spray โ€“ Protect your skin from sun exposure and pesky insects.

๐Ÿงป Tissues & Wipes โ€“ Great for happy tears and freshening up!

Tip: Opt for waterproof makeup to withstand any weather changes. I made my hairstylist/makeup artist hike with me. That's the best option if you have a friend willing to do that!

Adventure & Weather Preparedness

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Layers for Changing Weather โ€“ Light layers, gloves, or a warm scarf if eloping in cooler months.

โ˜” Clear Umbrella โ€“ A must-have for unexpected rain while still allowing gorgeous photos.

๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ Sunglasses โ€“ To keep your eyes comfortable in bright mountain light.

๐Ÿ’ง Water & Snacks โ€“ Stay hydrated and energized throughout the day.

๐Ÿ”ฆ Headlamp or Flashlight โ€“ Essential for sunrise or sunset elopements.

Tip: Even in warm seasons, mountain mornings and evenings can be chillyโ€”dress accordingly!

Photography & Keepsakes

๐Ÿ“ท Polaroid or Disposable Camera โ€“ Capture fun behind-the-scenes moments.

๐Ÿ“œ Letters or Notes to Each Other โ€“ A sweet addition to read during your ceremony.

๐ŸŒฟ Small Memento from Home โ€“ A sentimental touch like a locket or heirloom item.

๐ŸŽถ Portable Speaker โ€“ For a first dance or romantic background music.

Tip: A lightweight blanket can double as a beautiful picnic setting or an extra layer for warmth. Just make sure you take anything out that you brought in and leave only footprints! We want to practice Leave No Trace guidelines to do our part to protect our lands!

Optional Extras for an Unforgettable Day

๐Ÿฅ‚ Champagne & Glasses โ€“ For a celebratory toast after saying "I do."

๐Ÿฐ Small Wedding Cake or Treats โ€“ A sweet way to celebrate.

๐Ÿ“ Printed Map & Directions โ€“ Cell service can be spotty in the mountains, so have a backup.

๐ŸŽ’ Backpack for Easy Carrying โ€“ To store essentials without being bulky.

Tip: Keep everything organized in packing cubes or labeled bags to easily find what you need.
